Access Statement

Introduction

Smallwood House is located in the centre of Ambleside, we aim to cater for the needs of all our guests wherever possible. Our 12 en-suite bedrooms are spread over 3 floors. We are not able to install a lift, but if you ask us on booking we will try to make sure that you are allocated a room on the first floor if it is necessary, so do please let us know if you have any special requirements.  special requirements include allergies - non feather beds etc

Pre-Arrival

  • We may be contacted by telephone, e-mail or fax.
  • The nearest train station is Windermere which is roughly 4 miles away.
  • Ambleside is on the main bus route between Lancaster & Carlisle. The buses stop at the train station. The bus for Carlisle, or Grasmere will bring you into Ambleside. During the season buses run about every 20 minutes.
  • Taxis are also available at the train station, or we can book one for you prior to your arrival. Help with luggage can be given if required, but warning and bus times must be given. The bus stop is a short 5 minute level walk away.

Arrival & Car Parking Facilities

  • We do have private parking at the back of the hotel.
  • There is an entrance from the car park, this has 4 steps, each has a depth of 12" and a height of 7", the steps are 40" wide. There is a hand rail on the left hand side of the steps. The back door is open during the day and locked from about 10.30 pm, after this time access is through the front door only.
  • There is enough parking for all our guests, but the car park does get busy from time to time so if you are unsure of where to park your car, please do call in and ask, we will direct you

Main Entrance & Reception

  • The main entrance to the Smallwood is approached by 6 steps, the first being less than an inch in height, the others are each 7" high and 11" depth, and 70" wide. The steps have permanent handrails on either side. The front door is side hung, single leaf,and opens inwards with an automatic closer. When in reception there is a level floor area, which leads to the office and then to the dining room and lounge, the stairs to the upper floors also go from the receiption. The front door is unlocked or open during the day, but there is a doorbell at the top of the steps to contact staff, who will assist you as required.
  • When in reception, there is a bell to call for attention if there is nobody immediately available. Help will be given with luggage wherever necessary.
  • Pen and paper are available for anyone requiring them. During check-in we will explain car parking, meal times, and procedures etc. If required the paper work for check-in can be brought to you in the lounge, to complete.
  • The reception area is well lit throughout the day, with dimmed lighting during the evening. There is seating in the reception area.
  • A room key is provided for each room, extra keys are available upon request.
  • Information for the places of interest and what to do in the area can be found in reception.
  • Information for walks, maps & books are available from reception.

Public Areas - WC

  • All our rooms are en-suite,
  • However we do have a separate WC for our guests to use, which is at the top of the first flight of stairs.
  • This WC does have limited space.

Public Areas - General (Internal)

  • There is a lounge with plenty of seating on the ground floor.
  • Games, puzzles, cards and books are available for guests to use.
  • The lounge has a coal effect fire which can be lit on request if not already. The door into the lounge is side hung, single leaf with an automatic closure. There is a coffee table in the centre of the lounge which can be moved as required, also extra small tables with more height are available.
  • All of the property is carpeted
  • There are smoke detectors in every bedroom and each stairwell/landing.
  • There are Fire Extinguishers on each landing and close to the front door
  • Emergency lighting is installed in the hotel.

Restaurant / Dining Room, Bar & Lounges,

  • The dining room is accessed from reception. We have seating for 25, at tables for 2's 3's and 4's. All the tables and chairs are moveable, they are all stable with four legs each, none have a central column.
  • We are happy to cater for special diets, please let us know your requirements on booking preferably or remind us when you check in.
  • We do have a drinks license, but we do not have a bar, we can serve drinks to you at the table and in the lounge.

Bedrooms

  • All bedrooms have the following
  • Carpeted floors
  • Feather duvets & pillows, which may be changed on request for non-feather or for blankets
  • Colour television on the wall
  • Clock radio alarm and hair dryer ,
  • Tea/ coffee facilities on a shelf on the wall, with cordless kettle
  • Seating per person
  • Radiators with thermostatic valve
  • All bedrooms have an Information Folder giving ideas of places to visit and things to do in our area
  • Smoke detectors

Bathroom, Shower-room & WC [Ensuite or Shared]

  • All bedrooms are en-suite
  • All have tiled, heated floors
  • Some have baths some have walk-in showers

Treatment room/s

  • There are no treatment rooms at this property, but there are treatment rooms in the area and at the Low Wood Hotel, which is about 1.5 miles away.

Leisure Facilities

  • We have use of the leisure club at the Low Wood Hotel, which is situated 1.5 miles away.

  • There is a swimming pool, gym, sauna, spa bath and hot tub. Use of the Leisure Club for our guests, is free, a pass must be collected at reception and returned after use. 4 of our guests may go at one time. This facility is open from 7 am until 10 pm each day.

Future Plans

  • We have no specific plans at present, over the past 19 years, we have constantly upgraded, redecorated and made changes to enhance your stay with us. However, if you feel that is there is something you would particularly like to see us implement, we would be pleased to hear what it is.
